A grand day out in Great Langdale

For those wishing to do a challenging but stunning classic walk in the middle of the Lake Districts Fells, heres a whopper!

Starting at the New Dungeon Ghyll Inn at the National Trust car-park in Great Langdale (£5.60) you walk a mile up the road and through the National Trust camp site heading up the zig zag path up the hill (Pike Bield) until you meet the road as it crosses over the hill top.
Cross the road and contour around the hill following a feint but slowly obvious trail to the top of Pike of Blisco 705m, on arrival at the summit cairn you will see the long ridge of the Crinkle Crags leading to Bow Fell stretching out in front of you.
Head down to the right of Red Tarn and up the gentle path to the top of Great Knott 696m, then carry on the trail to the 5 crinckles of Crinkle Craggs.

The first and only tricky spot is the short 2m rock step (The Bad Step) up onto the first Crinkle (Not hard, I climbed up it with the dogs!), follow the Crinckles until you see the obvious climb up to Bow Fell from the Three Tarns saddle.

Climb up to Bow Fell 902m and admire the views to the left (West) of Scafell and Scafell Pike, then drop down to Ore Gap (descend right to Angle Tarn if weather changing or bushed!)  from Ore Gap head on up to Esk Pike 885m and continue down to Esk Hause and the track junction leading back to Tongue Head and Great Langdale (small cross walled shelter).

Descend right and back down Tongue Head towards Angle Tarn and up and over Rosset Gill into Great Langdale, follow Mickleden Beck (Cumbrian Way) back to Stickle Barn and the New Dungeon Ghyll Nat Trust car park.

This route is easy to Navigate and requires no great skill apart from steady footwork and a wedge of stamina and a good camera.

Distance 20km
Time 9 hrs
Height Gain 1624m
